Jar Jar was intensely polarizing. Kids loved him for being fun, adults hated him for being goofy. People get too invested in their feelings to ever look at things in a wider context - to the point where George Lucas "made major changes to the story arc".
It's actually a pretty similar thing to kayfabe - acting so outrageously polarizing as to make the audience suspend disbelief/critical thinking.
And then you look at how politicians like George W, Trump and Boris Johnson etc act...
